With the populations of Germany, Austria, Liechtenstein and parts of Switzerland, Luxembourg and Alsace all having German as their first language, there are over 110 million Europeans whose native tongue is German, compared to approximately 60 million whose first language is either French, Spanish or Italian.
Also, many citizens in lands like Bosnia, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Poland, Rumania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden and parts of other countries like Belgium and Holland, have German as a second language.
With English as the native language of the U.K. along with countries like Ireland, the Channel Isles and Gibraltar, English is the second most widely spoken native language in Europe, with many of the countries mentioned above also having English as a second or third tongue.
